Marta Bally Lab feels proud as it looks back to 2024 which is filled with remarkable achievements and inspiring moments. From significant scientific advancements to community-building experiences, the journey this year underscores our dedication to pushing the boundaries of physical virology.

*Paper Celebration

One of our proudest moments was the publication of our research in Science Advances. Led by Fouzia from our lab in collaboration with Laura from Mario Schelhaas’s group from the university of Münster (Germany), this study unveiled critical insights into HPV16 infection, highlighting the pivotal role of heparan sulfate. This achievement places Marta Bally Lab at the forefront of virology research.

*Securing Research Funding

The year also brought tremendous support for our work through funding from the Swedish Research Council for two innovative proposals. This funding will support Marta’s vision to advance physical virology. Besides, early in 2024, we celebrated our third MSCA fellowship, awarded to our postdoc Malgorzata (Gosia), marking a significant milestone for the lab.

*New Leadership Role

Another exciting moment of this year was Marta’s appointment as Deputy Director of the Umeå Center for Microbial Research (UCMR) opening a new chapter in her career. In this role, she aims to shape and develop Umeå’s research environment within microbial research and infection, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and drive innovative research and educational initiatives. We wish her our best in this new exciting role.

*Organised a Scientific Event

This year also saw the organization of the Viral Vectors and Virus-Like Particles Symposium. Coordinated by Gosia and Tessy from the Evander and Gerold labs, the symposium brought together experts to share ground-breaking findings in virology. Supported by UCMR and the Faculty of Medicine, the event stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and shared knowledge.

*Outside the Lab

Asides our scientific pursuits, our lab also enjoyed some fun and relaxing moments, including a memorable June barbecue hosted by Marta and Hudson where we welcomed back Chloé from France. These events remind us how essential it is to take some time off from work and build up a strong, collaborative team spirit.

As we look ahead to 2025, we are filled with optimism and excitement. The achievements of this year have set a solid foundation for future discoveries, and we remain committed to pushing the frontiers of physical virology. One of the many events that we are excited about in 2025, is the EMBO|FEBS Lecture Course on Physical Virology: Across Length Scales, organized by Marta, along with Susan, Ekaterina and Pedro. It promises to be an inspiring event—be sure to check it out!

To everyone who has supported us on this journey, thank you. Together, we will continue making strides in understanding viral infections while fostering a vibrant, collaborative research environment.

Here’s to another year of innovation, discovery, and community at Marta Bally Lab. Don’t forget to follow us on LinkedIn to stay connected with our latest updates!
